The world of work is constantly changing, and while having a tertiary qualification can increase your chances of getting a job, it does not necessarily guarantee it. One of the main reasons for this is the increasing intensity and scope of competitiveness, and as a result to stay on top has become more difficult. Success is now about your understanding and maximum use of your abilities.

Job hunting can get you down while it is crucial to have a happy puppy syndrome and maintain it, unless you want to portray yourself as someone in the doldrums. Here are ways to avoid the job searching slumps and stay upbeat:

1. Organize your day.
Structure your day with the same discipline as you would a work day. Include network activities, research activities and cold calls. Record all results and make sure to follow-up. In this way you will be able to maintain and feel in control over the job search.

2. Build a support network around you.
Avoid the negative types who distract or discourage you from your job search. Instead, observe and learn from successful professionals who you look up to. Surround yourself with people who will motivate and inspire you rather than bring you down.

3. Remind yourself of past achievements.
It is easy to lose confidence in yourself if your job search keeps on extending and doesn’t produce positive results. It is a good idea to remind yourself of past accomplishments, even whilst re-energizing and rethinking the strategy for your job search.

4. Learn a new skill.
You may want to use this time to learn a new skill, through taking a short course or reading books. It can be other areas you want to develop or fine tuning technical skills related to your industry. These skills can be included in your CV once done.

5. Do some volunteer work.
This is one way of making yourself useful, and it widens your networking circles. You can enjoy learning a new activity, at the same time have the immense satisfaction that comes with helping others.
